T his patch was created in honor of the USS AMERICA CVA 66
for her service to protect the United States of America and all of its citizens.
Every element of the design tells a part of her story.
The dates signify her commissioning and her last mission, which did
not occur in 1996 when she was decommissioned but rather in May of
2005 as, according to the Navy, she was sacrificed for the benefit of
our future naval aircraft carrier force.
While the aft view signifies the finality of her last voyage, the strength
and brightness of the sun comes from a heart that still thinks of her as
strong and invincible – sailing the seven seas with a mighty presence
which she did for over three decades.
The black around the perimeter is in memory of our comrades who died while
serving aboard the AMERICA.
This is my one final salute to my ship and her crew. May her service
and the sacrifice of the men who sailed her live on in recorded history.
John J. Vazoulas Sr.
