I was aboard the USS AMERICA and served two terms during which time the American Spirit (1976) printed an article that the ship's post office would be selling special envelopes with a cancellation from the ship. A shipmate, Frederick Hutchings, ASE2, and I purchased almost everything the post office had, including an envelope with gold leaf that had been printed for the Commander and Chief.
The next day the American Spirit printed an article requesting that the sailor who bought the envelope with the gold leaf please return it to the post office. I deliberated about returning it, then said to my chief that I wasn't going to turn it in - I had purchased it fair and square. I have a complete set of all 50 states cancelled onboard the ship July 4, 1976. .
